Toyota is recalling 228,367 model-year 2022โ€“2026 Sienna Hybrid 7-passenger vans under NHTSA campaign 26V690000 because second-row seat backs may not stay secured in a crash. Dealers reprogram the airbag (SRS) control unit free of charge; vans with the Mobility as a Service package also get both second-row seat backs replaced. Letters mail December 7, 2026.

What exactly is being recalled?

Toyota reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on October 20, 2026 that "the second-row seat backs may fail to remain secured in the event of a crash" on certain 2022โ€“2026 Sienna Hybrid 7-passenger vans. The federal record lists 228,367 vehicles and files the defect under "SEATS:MID/REAR ASSEMBLY:RECLINER" โ€” the recliner, the mechanism that locks the seat back upright.

The consequence, in the manufacturer's own wording: "A seat back that is not secured may fail to properly protect an occupant during a crash, increasing the risk of injury".

Is my Sienna included?

Item What the recall record says
NHTSA campaign number 26V690000
Toyota's own recall codes 26TB24 and 26TA24
Model years 2022โ€“2026
Vehicle Sienna Hybrid, 7-passenger
Vehicles affected 228,367
Report received by NHTSA October 20, 2026
Owner letters Expected to be mailed December 7, 2026

The campaign is written for the 7-passenger Sienna Hybrid, so 8-passenger builds are not named in it. Build-date ranges are not given in the federal summary, so a VIN check โ€” the 17-character vehicle identification number on your dashboard, door-jamb sticker, registration or insurance card โ€” is the only way to settle it for your van.

How do I check my VIN?

Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or on Toyota's owner site. If nothing shows yet, check again around the December 7, 2026 letter date, and call Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 quoting recall code 26TB24 or 26TA24.

What will the dealer actually do, and is it free?

Two different remedies, depending on how your van is equipped [1]:

Your van Remedy Cost
Standard 7-passenger Sienna Hybrid Update the supplemental restraint system (SRS) electronic control unit (ECU) software โ€” the restraint computer's programming Free
Equipped with the "Mobility as a Service" (MaaS) package Dealers "will replace the two second-row seat backs" Free

A software reflash is a short shop visit. A seat-back replacement is a parts job โ€” and parts are exactly where Sienna seat recalls have stalled before (below).

Is it safe to drive, and can anyone sit in the second row?

The federal record for 26V690000 carries no "do not drive" or "park outside" flag, and no instruction to leave the second row empty. The defect described is a crash-protection failure, not something that affects normal driving.

If you want to be cautious with a child seat before the repair, ask your dealer for guidance tied to your VIN, or a certified child passenger safety technician about alternative seating positions in the van.

How is this different from the 2025 seat-rail recall?

Different part, different fix, different vans. Here is every recent Sienna Hybrid seat campaign side by side.

Campaign Reported to NHTSA Vehicles Problem Fix Letters
25V086000 February 13, 2025 2021โ€“2025 Sienna Hybrid Third-row seatback bolts may not be tightened properly Tighten the seat assembly bolts, free Mailed April 1, 2025
25V668000 October 7, 2025 54,631 (2025) Second-row seat rails may be welded improperly Replace the second-row seat rails, free; phased recall Mailed May 15, 2026
26V690000 October 20, 2026 228,367 (2022โ€“2026) Second-row seat backs may not remain secured in a crash SRS ECU software update; MaaS vans get both second-row seat backs replaced, free Expected December 7, 2026

The 2025 weld recall is a hardware job on one model year; the new one is primarily a software calibration across five model years. A van can be caught by both.

What if the dealer says the parts aren't available?

That is the live problem with the 2025 seat-rail campaign. NHTSA has logged 268 owner complaints on the 2025 Sienna Hybrid, 213 of them filed against SEATS. A complaint filed July 1, 2026 by a business says the van "had been inoperable since the recall notification was received"; one filed August 13, 2026 says repairs were "denied due to the 2nd row seats being converted for wheelchair accessibility". An owner on May 29, 2026 wrote: "We have not been able to use the second row seats for over 7 months".

The new campaign is already showing the same pattern: a complaint filed October 23, 2026 says the owner "received notification of Manufacturer Recall Number: 26TB24); however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available".

Those delays reached court. On October 21, 2026 it was reported that Toyota lost its bid to dismiss a class action over the Sienna seat defect and "months-long repair delays," and that the seat-rail recall lawsuit is moving forward.

If your dealer can't schedule the work:

  1. Get the wait in writing โ€” an email or a repair order noting that parts are unavailable.
  2. Call Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 to open a case and ask about a loaner.
  3. File your own complaint at nhtsa.gov/report-a-safety-problem โ€” the complaint file is what shows the regulator that a remedy is stalling.

Facts here come from the federal recall records and complaint database as of October 29, 2026.

FAQ

Does the Toyota Sienna recall apply to non-hybrid or 8-passenger Siennas?

The record for 26V690000 covers certain "2022-2026 Sienna Hybrid 7-passenger vehicles." Eight-passenger configurations are not named in it. Run your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls to be sure, because seating configuration and options vary by build.

When will owners be notified?

Toyota expects to mail owner notification letters on December 7, 2026. You don't have to wait: a VIN check, or a call to 1-800-331-4331 quoting recall code 26TB24 or 26TA24, works now.

Is the repair free?

Yes. The federal record states repairs will be performed free of charge, whether your van needs only the SRS electronic control unit software update or, with the Mobility as a Service package, replacement of both second-row seat backs.

Can my kids ride in the second row until it’s fixed?

The federal record carries no do-not-drive warning and no instruction to leave the second row empty; the risk described applies in a crash. If you want to be cautious, ask your dealer for guidance tied to your VIN or a certified child passenger safety technician about seating positions.

What is the Mobility as a Service (MaaS) package?

It is an equipment package named in the recall remedy. Vans with it get a different fix: instead of only the SRS software update, dealers replace the two second-row seat backs, free of charge.

I’m buying a used Sienna โ€” what should I check?

Check the VIN against 26V690000 (second-row seat backs, 2022โ€“2026), 25V668000 (2025 second-row seat rails, 54,631 vans) and 25V086000 (2021โ€“2025 third-row seatback bolts), and ask the seller for repair orders proving each was completed.
